Robert Downey, Jr. Cast as Martin Luther King, Jr.

By Pete Grossman

Hollywood, CA (INS) It has been confirmed that Steven Spielberg will produce the definitive Martin Luther King, Jr. biography and will cast Robert Downy, Jr. as the slain civil rights leader.

“Robert Downey, Jr.’s work in Tropic Thunder, where he portrays an African-American actor convinced me that he could play Martin Luther King, Jr.,” Spielberg said. “Have you seen that movie? He stands out in a cast of great actors so he can certainly do right by King’s legacy.”

“I’m not truly comfortable with his choice” says Dexter King, who sold the rights to his father’s story to Spielberg’s movie company. “Although Spielberg is a genius and I respect him, I have a dream that he’ll come to his senses and consider other actors who are more qualified like Jamie Foxx, Denzel Washington or Queen Latifa. Heck I’d even settle for a Waylans brother.”

“I for one am thrilled with choice!” said Jack Black, who starred with Downey in Tropic Thunder. “He’ll be the white dude, playing a black dude of a famous civil rights dude. Man that rocks!”

  1. Damn… I wanted that role!

  2. Grossman Dude: you got it wrong to say that Downey Jr. “portrays an African-American actor.” The dude plays a dumb-ass white Method actor who throws himself so totally into his role as a black dude that he dyes his skin brown. That Spielberg dude would know this and would cast Jack Black, whose body type is more similar to King’s, as the civil rights leader. Think of the VARIETY headline: “Black Plays Black”!

  3. Mr. Credenza! Once again an insightful comment! VARIETY would indeed have a field day – and oh the controversy it would spark! Thanks again :-D
